My giant goes with me wherever I go

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Traveling is a fool’s paradise. Our first journeys discover to us the indifference of places. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty, and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the stern fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from. I seek the Vatican, and the palaces. I affect to be intoxicated with sights and suggestions, but I am not intoxicated. My giant goes with me wherever I go. -by Ralph Waldo Emerson

travel can’t define a life

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

To me, travel can’t define a life, travel must be the thing that holds a mirror back up to yourself, to your life, and forces you to see it in a different light, through different eyes, reversed. -by Resident Wayfarer

Land of Beyond

Monday, September 20th, 2010
Thank God! There is always a Land of Beyond
For us who are true to the trail;
A vision to seek, a beckoning peak,
A farness that never will fail;
A pride in our soul that mocks at a goal,
A manhood that irks at a bond,
And try how we will, unattainable still,
Behold it, our Land of Beyond!

Traveling helps tear down the walls

Friday, September 17th, 2010

I travel because in this modern globalized world, one can’t understand it without experiencing new cultures and new places. If we are to move past the divisions of history and get along, we have to have cultural understanding. We can’t put walls up. Traveling helps tear down the walls that lead to misunderstanding and conflict. -by Matt Kepnes
